An Interview with Dr. Poonam Jain
Poonam Jain, MD
Learning Objectives:
After hearing this interview podcast, the listener should:
- Understand
the effects of sports and energy drinks on tooth enamel
- Be better able to provide nutritional counseling to his or her patients
Dr. Poonam Jain is Professor and Director of Community Dentistry at the Southern
Illinois University School of Dental Medicine. In the 2012 May/June edition of General Dentistry, Dr. Jain and colleagues published a study
that linked sports drinks and energy drinks to dental caries and the breakdown of tooth enamel. The study highlights the deleterious effects that the acid in such beverages can have in the oral health of consumers and has created interest in the topic on a national scale. This interview, conducted by
THE NEXT DDS, should give dental students further insight into the study (i.e, its design, methodology, results, and conclusion), and
aid students in nutritional/oral health counseling with their patients.
